Strolling down the aisle of your grocery store, you're out of oil
and
, though you don't know it, about the make a fateful
decision. There, you hesitate between two choices, olive oil or
canola oil.
Why not canola?  It's a lot cheaper and available.
That would be the wrong choice.

In fact, it's the worst choice you could make. For if you could
separate out the hundreds of decisions you make every day
into those that either help you fight against Alzheimer's or
those that worsen your outlook for developing the disease,
perhaps the
worst decision you can make is to put that bottle
of canola oil in your shopping cart
.

New studies have discovered that choosing canola oil t
o take
home is about the worst decision you can make if you're
concerned about Alzheimer's risk. Why is canola oil a poor
choice fro Alzheimer's risk? And why is olive oil the hands-doan
best choice?

Canola Oil Encourages the Start of Tangles and Plaques in Your
Brain

In December of 2017 , Dr. Domenico Praticò of the Lewis Katz
School of Medicine at Temple University reported the surprising
results of a study on canola oil. Dr. Katz was aware that canola
oil was widely advertised as "healthy" and, as a specialist on
Alzheimer's disease, he wanted to test that claim. The question
was, "Is cola oil really 'healthy' for the brain"?

So, Katz and his research associate had set out to test canola
oil's effect on the memory of mice. Would canola oil be healthy
for the brain? The team fed two groups of mice two different
diets. The diets of the mice in the first group contained canola
oil while the diets of the mice in the second group did not.

Alzheimer's disease is charcaterized by the presence of amyloid
plaques and phosphorylated tau. These amyloid plaques and
tau cause the formation of tau neurofibrillary tangles, which in
turn damage neurons your brain need to form and retain
memories. As a result, memory loss occurs.

Back to the ice experiment. Starting from the time they were six
months old, the mice were fed diets that either included canola
oil or did not. Those that received canola oil got about a
teaspoon a day.

When the mice were 12 months old, the researchers tested
their memory and found that the group that had been fed
canola oil fared much worse on memory tests.

Biopsies of the mice brains showed that those mice which had
been fed canola oil for just 6 months showed devastating
damage to their neuron synaptic connections -- making it
unlikely they could form and retain memories  --- as well as the
presence of tau tangles and the presence of the most
dangerous form of amyloid plaques, called amyloid 1-42.

These are the types of damage one observes in humans with
Alzheimer's disease.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil Vacuums Away Waste Material in the Brain

Extra virgin olive oil, on the other hand, sweeps away debris
and toxins in the brain, including harmful Alzheimer-related tau
tangles and amyloid plaques. This cleaning process is called
"autophagy".

This was the discovery made by the same team of researchers
from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine atTemple University in a
different experiment in June of 2017.

The team started the experiment with mice that genetically
were destined to develop Alzheimer's disease. They then fed
one group of the mice a diet enriched with extra virgin olive oil
while the other group, the controls, ate a regular diet.

After 9 months and after 12 months, the researchers say clear
differences in the performances of the mice on memory tests.
The olive oil fed mice had greater working memory, spatial
memory and learning abilities.

After the animals were underwent biopsy, researchers
confirmed that the brains of the mice that had been fed extra
virgin olive oil had healthy, intact synaptic nerve endings, as
well as much lower levels of amyloid plaques and tau tangles.
This indicated that the olive oil mice had been experiencing
autophagy, the regular clean-away of brain waste. The control
group had significant levels of amyloid plaques and tau tangles,
levels consistent with Alzheimer's disease.

In effect, stepping back from the data, we can say that the
extra virgin olive oil appeared to prevent these mice, that
genetically were bred to develop Alzheimer's, from getting the
disease.

This experiment was a landmark in Alzheimer's research. As
Dr. Praticò explained, "This is a very important discovery, since
we suspect that a reduction in autophagy marks the beginning
of Alzheimer's disease. "

How Should You Add Extra Virgin Olive Oil to Your Diet

So, now you know that olive oil helps the brain to clean itself.
If you want to increase the levels of extra virgin olive oil in
your diet, it is probably better to add it to cold. Heating oil
oxidizes the oil and can increase your risk for heart disease.

Add cold extra virgin olive oil to your salad dressings, to use as
a dip with whole grain bread, and as a substitute for other oils
in your sandwich spreads.  Use it in your antipasti vegetable
recipes and to help marinate your fish.
