Chakras are, for those who believe in them, centers of energy in our
bodies which can activate healing. Chakras belong to a cluster of
mind-body healing practices which include yoga, meditation, qigong,
reiki, acupuncture and aura manipulation. All of these practices try to
draw from energies which are not obvious to the naked eye to achieve
physical healing.

Is there anything to it? In other words, do chakras work?  The
emerging answer is "yes".  Scientists have long noted that yoga,
acupuncture and meditation and simple belief summon the body's
power to heal. For example, in World War II, Dr. Henry Beecher used
mind-body healing to treat soldiers on the beaches of Anzio. Morphine
was in short supply, so the doctor merely injected saline in the
wounded soldiers. To his surprise, he discovered that  the soldiers
who had merely been injected with saline expereinced complete pain
relief.

Subsequent research has further supported the unseen connections
between relaxation and meditative techniques and wound healing.  A
1999 study by researchers from Emory University found that
meditative practices activate production of melatonin in the body
which in turn reduced the size of breast cancer and prostate cancer
tumors. The researchers theorize that meditative and relaxation
practices modulate the release of stress hormones which may
otherwise undermine the ability of our immune systems to combat
infection and the growth of tumors.

Much as Einstein's Theory of the Universe illuminated the way that
unseen forces influence the way that our observable, physical
universe works, new integarted theories of the mind-body connection
are being developed in medical science to explain how healing occurs.

A 2001 study by Professor Change of Emory University heralded this
new emerging paradagim of mind-body healing. As Professor Chang
observed "Meridians and chakras are related to the
underdifferentiated, interconnected cellular network that regulates
growth and physiology. This theory explains the distribution and
nonspecific activation of organizing centers and acupuncture points;
the high electric conductance of the meridian system; the polarity
effect of electroacupuncture; the side-effect profile of acupuncture;
and the ontogeny, phylogeny, and physiologic function of the meridian
system and chakra system. It also successfully predicted several
findings in conventional biomedical science ".

Chakras, meridian systems and acupuncture points are ways to
visualize the organization of your body's natural healing centers. Once
activated, these centers may summon your body's power to heal itself.

Here, then, is an introduction to the 7 chakra centers  of your body:

Introduction to Chakras

Most sources on chakras define them as seven centers of spiritual
energy in the human body. These 7 spiritual centers are often
described as spinning vortexes, hidden to the human eye. They are
stimulated and affected by our daily interaction with the environment,
other humans, and our personal influx of food and liquids.

If you imagine the human body upright, the 7 chakras run in a vertical
line along the spine. Each chakra is associated with a color and
figuratively tied to surrounding organs and body parts. The 7 chakras,
from bottom to top are:

1.
Root Chakra (Red): The root or base chakra is located at the
base of your spine.  If imbalanced, it stimulated negatively, it
mainfests passion and lust. If stimualed positively, it manifests
positive energy potential throughout your body.
When your base chakra is out of balance, you experience fatigue,
depression, cold hands and cold feet. This base chakra can be
stimulated with physical exercise as well as the consumption of red
food and drink.

2.
Spleen Chakra (Orange): Imbalances include eating disorders
and urinary problems. Water aerobics and massages are important in
stimulating the orange chacra.

3.
Solar Plexus Chakra (Yellow): This chacra is located above the
navel in the stomach area. Imbalances include digestive problems and
poor memory. Getting plenty of sunshine and working mind puzzles
can be used in stimulation.

4.
Heart Chakra (Green): Heart problems and muscle tension are
associated with this chakra. Green foods and nature walks are
recommended in balancing the green spirituality center.

5.
Throat Chakra (Blue): Hormonal disorders such as PMS in
women as well as fevers and flu in both sexes are tied to the throat
chakra. Stimulants include cultural activities such as art collecting,
reading poetry and singing.
6.
Third Eye Chakra (Indigo): Also known as the Brow Chakra, it
is located between the eyes. Sleeping disorders are linked to the Third
Eye chakra. Meditation is recommended.

7.
Crown Chakra (Violet): Imbalances include headaches,
varicose veins and skin rashes. Those who want to balance their
crown chakra might write down their dreams and visions. Lavender is
seen as an essential oil to use when focusing on this chakra.

Contrary to popular opinion, yoga is not the only way to call on your
inner chakras. It is true that many schools of yoga teach and follow
the chakra philosophy, but as you can see, there are many ways of
stimulating the different spiritual points.

Modern science has yet to completely integrate or even  acknowledge
the chakra philosophy. For this reason, deciding whether or not to
focus on chakra stimulation is a very personal decision, and only those
who practice are able to judge whether or not the process is
beneficial.  As the old saying goes, to the believer, no proof is
necessary. To the non-believer, no proof is possible.
