Quercetin Can Help Cure Cystitis

The bioflavonoid quercetin is reported to have anti-
inflammation powers and is therefore said to be useful for
treating cystitis and urinary tract infections. What’s the
evidence? According to a 2001 study from Harbor-UCLA
Medical Center, UCLA School of Medicine, California a dose of
500mg of quercetin twice a day for four weeks proved
clinically effective in treating interstitial cystitis.

4.
Glycosaminoglycans May Help Treat Cystitis

A 1996 study from Oklahoma University Health Sciences
Center demonstrated that the surface layer of the bladder is
deficient in protective natural substances called
glycosaminoglycans when interstitial cystitis is present.
When this happens, the bladder can become inflamed and
contribute to the cystitis condition. Some experts have
suggested glycosaminoglycans in the form of mesoglycan or
chondroitin sulphate as supplements in order to treat
interstitial cystitis.

5.
What You Eat Affects Your Experience of Cystitis

Can your diet help ease the symptoms of cystitis, or even
prevent you from suffering from cystitis in the first place?

There is no solid scientific evidence to confirm or refute the
diet question, but many sufferers swear that certain foods
and drinks worsen their symptoms.

Top offenders include coffee and chocolate, soda, citrus
fruits and tomatoes. 1999 research from Pennsylvania State
University, College of Medicine came to the conclusion that
there were many possible treatments for cystitis and that
diet was one of the options. If you think your cystitis may be
affected by what you eat, consider experimenting with your
diet until you find the best relief.

6.
Can TENS Treat Interstitial Cystitis?

TENS, or transcutaneous electrical stimulation, is a technique
mainly used for treating muscular aches and pains. It has
also been tried on interstitial cystitis. A 1994 study from
Sahlgrenska University Hospital, University of Göteborg,
Sweden attempted the long-term treatment of interstitial
cystitis with transcutaneous electrical stimulation and found
it was moderately effective at bringing the condition to
remission.

7. Guided Imagery? A Possible Cystitis Treatment

Guided imagery – a script on CD that focuses on healing the
bladder and relaxing the muscles in the pelvic floor – may be
useful for women suffering from interstitial cystitis. A 2008
study from William Beaumont Hospital, MI tested 30 women
with interstitial cystitis by using a 25-minute guided imagery
CD, twice a day for eight weeks. More than 45 percent of the
treated women reported a moderate or marked improvement
after using the guided imagery CD.

8.
Uva Ursi Helps Treat Cystitis

This beneficial herb has a long history of use in treating
urinary conditions. It seems a component in the herb –
arbutin – was often recommended, pre-antibiotics, as a
treatment for urinary tract infections. Arbutin is broken
down in your intestine to form hydroquinone, which acts like
an antiseptic in your bladder. There has been some relatively
modern research into uva ursi – in particular a 1975 report
from Kedzia B, Wrocinski T, Mrugasiewicz K, et al. called
“Antibacterial action of urine containing arbutin metabolic
products” that found uva ursi positively affected the bacteria
that infect the urinary tract.

9.
Calcium and Magnesium for Treating Cystitis

Surprisingly, you may have a cure for cystitis right in your
kitchen.  Foods rich in calcium and magnesium (or
supplements of these two nutrients) may help cystsitis.

A 2008 study from the Department of Urology at Lenox Hill
Hospital, New York found 60.7 percent of patients who took
calcium glycerophosphate felt their symptoms of cystitis
improved.

When magnesium is added, which helps neutralize food
acids, the effect is apparently more powerful although there
is little evidence to be completely certain. Here is a
list of
foods rich in magnesium.

10.
Vitamin C Can Prevent Bladder Infections and Cystitis

Vitamin C is not only good for cutting your cold and flu risk.
According to a 2007 Scandinavian study by Ochoa-Brust GJ,
Fernandez AR, Villanueva-Ruiz GJ, et al, taking a dose of
100mg a day reduced the number of bladder infections
women suffered during pregnancy.

How does Vitamin C help cystitis? Vitamin C slightly increases
the acidity levels in your urine, which make the bladder a
really unfriendly place for bacteria like e.coli.
