What's my dress size? If you have ever been faced with the
problem of finding your correct dress size in a catalog, you've
got plenty of company. Dress sizes vary from designer to
designer, from manufacturer to manufacturer, from country to
country. Even within a country, such as the United States,
dress sizes have changed over time. A size 10 today may be
what a size 6 or 8 was in your mother's generation. In general,
dress sizes have drifted upward from the standard sizes 40
years ago, as Americans have grown more and more
overweight.
Then, there is the problem of money. Stores like to make
money. Stores long ago figured out that a woman is more likely
to buy a dress in which she fits a size "6" before she'll buy a
dress in which she fits a size "16" , so, as women became
heavier,they simply changed the label. A size 10 became a size
6. Presto-chango. Ca-ching! More sales.
Here are the basic rules. Your dress sizes depends on your
height and the type of figure you have.
Junior Sizes-- A junior size corresponds to a height between
5'2" and 5'5" with a slender figure.
Misses Sizes --A misses size corresponds to a height between
5'5" and 5'7" with a well proportioned figure.
Women's Sizes --A women's size corresponds to a height
between 5'5" and 5'8" and a fuller and rounder figure. The
women's sizes do not correspond to bust measurements. A half
size is somewhat shorter than a misses size and a bit fuller and
rounder.
Petite--A petite size is somewhat shorter than a misses size,
with heights running from 4'8" to 5'4". The more expensive the
dress, the more likely the manufacturer is to label the dress
with a size or two smaller than its true size.
