THE BEST MEDICINEf-
LAUGH!

FIRST DOSE
There are always two ways
to look at everything, I
guess. My wife and I were
sitting at a table at my
high school reunion last
October, and I kept staring
at a drunken lady swigging
her drink as she
sat alone at a nearby
table. My wife noticed me
staring and asked me, "Do
you know her?".

"Yes",
I sighed, "She's my old
girlfriend. I understand she
took to drinking right after
we split up those
many years ago, and I
hear she hasn't been sober
since." "My God!" says my
wife, "Who would
think a person could go on
celebrating that long?"

THE BEST MEDICINE-
LAUGH!

SECOND DOSE
Last night, my friend and I
were sitting in the living
room and
I said to her, "I never want
to live in a vegetative
state, dependent on
some machine and fluids
from a bottle. If that ever
happens, just pull the
plug."

She got up, unplugged the
TV, and threw out my wine

Does drinking cold water really burn calories? And how many
calories does it burn?

Yes, drinking cold water does actually burn calories. Your body
expends energy warming the water up to body temperature.

To see exactly how many calories you burn, consider this.

Say you drink 16 ounces of cold water. The temperature of that
glass is zero degrees Celsius.

Your body maintains a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius (96.3
degrees Fahrenheit).

By the time the water leaves your body in the form of urine, its
temperature has been raised 37 degrees Celsius.

It takes 1 calorie to raise 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius.

There are 473.18 grams in 16 fluid ounces of water.  For you
drinking 8 ounce glasses, that's 236.59 grams.

So if you drink a 16-ounce glass of ice water, your body must
raise the temperature of 473.18 grams of water from zero
degrees Celsius to 37 degrees Celsius.

To accomplish this feat, your body burns 17,508 calories.  You
get this figure by multiplying 473.18 by 37 degrees Celsius.

But that's calories with a little "c."  The kind of calories that
your body uses for food --and that you count when you follow
a diet-- are Kilo Calories, with a capital C.

So, to raise the temperature of a 16 ounce glass of cold water,
your body burns 17.5 Calories.  To raise the temperature of an
8-ounce glass of cold water, your body burns 8.75 Calories.

Not much, you might think. That is, until you realize that if you
drink 8 full glasses of cold water a day, you would burn 70
Calories a day. That's 2100 Calories a month.  Since it takes
3500 Calories to equal a pound, you would lose 6 pounds
every 10 months. Just from drinking water. Not bad.
