Chances are you know someone who’s had liposuction, is
considering liposuction or is saving up for the procedure. You
may even be thinking about liposuction yourself. Who wouldn’t
be tempted by the chance to shift those stubborn love handles
and lose the wobbly belly fat without even stepping on the
treadmill or starting a diet? Liposuction is currently the fourth
most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US. According to
the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 203,000 Americans had
liposuction in 2010, and that figure is up two percent from 2009.

But is liposuction really the quick-fix answer to a heavyweight
problem? Is liposuction actually good for your body or are the
risks of liposuction too great? After all, liposuction has killed
several people in recent years including famous faces like rapper
Kanye West's mother. What are the pros and cons of liposuction?
We know that extra
fat around your waist has been linked to
increase risk for diabetes and heart disease. Does liposuction
reduce your risk for diabetes and heart disease? Should you go
under the knife to lose your belly fat?

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is also known as lipoplasty and it is a cosmetic
surgery procedure to remove excess fat from the body.
Liposuction is commonly known for reducing belly fat but
liposuction can also be used on other areas of the body where
stubborn fat is a problem – thighs, back, arms, neck and even
cheeks and calves.

The surgeon inserts a series of thin tubes or cannulas into the
area to be treated, and connects them to a suction syringe or
vacuum pump. The movement and the position of the cannula
break down fat cells and they are suctioned out using the vacuum
pump. Fluid is injected into the body in order to help prevent
blood loss.

You’ll usually have a general anesthetic for liposuction and the
procedure can take between 30 minutes and several hours
depending on how much fat you are having removed. There are
variations on liposuction that make the process more or less
invasive. For example, laser liposuction is one of the least invasive
procedures while dry liposuction can be very invasive and result
in extensive bruising.

What Are The Risks of Liposuction?

As well as the bruising described above, possible liposuction risks
include nerve damage, scarring, bleeding, swelling and pain. You
may be left with an unevenly contoured body or unsightly loose
skin. Serious complications are rare after liposuction, but
according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
the frequency of serious complications increases with the number
of body areas treated and the volume of fat removed.

Infection is one of the more serious risks of liposuction. If the
wound gets infected it can progress rapidly and sometimes fatally
to toxic shock and necrotizing fasciitis. Blood clots, damage to the
abdominal organs, muscles and lungs are other serious
complications of liposuction.

Can Liposuction Kill?

On occasions liposuction can, and does, result in death. Here a a
few of the celebrated cases. Krista Stryland, 32, from Toronto
died after liposuction in 2007. Maria Shortall, 38, from Florida
died following relatively minor liposuction.

The wife of former Scotland soccer player Colin Hendry died
seven years after liposuction due to a punctured bowel sustained
during the botched operation.

And Donda West, mother of entertainer Kanye West, died in 2007
of heart failure as a result of surgeries including liposuction and
breast reduction.
