THE BEST MEDICINEf-
LAUGH!

FIRST DOSE
There are always two ways
to look at everything, I
guess. My wife and I were
sitting at a table at my
high school reunion last
October, and I kept staring
at a drunken lady swigging
her drink as she
sat alone at a nearby
table. My wife noticed me
staring and asked me, "Do
you know her?".

"Yes",
I sighed, "She's my old
girlfriend. I understand she
took to drinking right after
we split up those
many years ago, and I
hear she hasn't been sober
since." "My God!" says my
wife, "Who would
think a person could go on
celebrating that long?"

THE BEST MEDICINE-
LAUGH!

SECOND DOSE
Last night, my friend and I
were sitting in the living
room and
I said to her, "I never want
to live in a vegetative
state, dependent on
some machine and fluids
from a bottle. If that ever
happens, just pull the
plug."

She got up, unplugged the
TV, and threw out my wine

Peace of Mind--Practical Tips for Finding
Peace of Mind

How do you achieve peace of mind? Are there any practical
tips for achieving inner peace?

We Americans worry. It's a little known fact that over 67%
of us have some form of constant worry. And for most of us
those worries are severe enough to interfere with our sleep.

If we had a physical condition which made it impossible to
stop our legs from walking, we would know that is an
emergency. We would know that constant walking will
exhaust us until we collapsed.

But when it comes to our minds, we are far more careless.
We worry, take our worries even to bed with us, never
turning our minds off. Our minds go and go and go, all-day,
24-7, 12 and 365, and yet we don't think of this as an
emergency.

It is an emergency. Just like your legs, just like a TV or
computer, your brain needs down time. I'll say that again:
your brain needs down time.

Here are some practical tips for giving you some needed
down time:

1. Eat right. There are
foods that boost your moods
naturally, so make sure your daily diet includes them.

2. Yoga. Tried and true. Yoga, which emphasizes breathing
and slow motion and stretch, will help you to focus inward,
and leave worries to the side for awhile.

3. Tai Chi. Same effect as yoga but also has been shown to
help lower blood pressure. Article continues below.

4. Meditation. Simple meditative practices such as dwelling
on a prayer can help.

5. Drawing. Most of us stop doing this in grade school. But
what worked then works now. Drawing helps to draw you in
from the outside world, and induces a meditative state.

6. Walk. Walking at least 30 minutes a day will lower your
blood sugar and give you a few moments to just enjoy your
life, the fact that you are here, healthy, waking. It's a
gateway drug to better mental health.

7.
Spend Time With a Pet. Research has shown that people
who care for pets have lower rates of depression. Stroking
pets also reduces your risk of stroke. Anyone who has a pet
can tell you that the simple act of inducing a smile or a purr
is enough to relax your mind and flood your body with
happiness and peace.

Many doctors are now encouraging very sick patients to
write down their thoughts on the lives of their pets. It's one
of the best self help therapies in the world. It makes you
honor the life of another living thing that is sharing yourlife.
In doing so, it takes your mind off yourself, and thus
reduces stress.
