If you've ever pressed your nose against the glass of the department store window, wishing you could fit into that perfect size 6 dress, then take heart. Size 6 may not be as far away as you think.
How much weight do you have to lose to get into a size 6 dress? The answer, it turns out, has changed over the years.
Just What Is a Size 6 Dress?
Here's some good news. Fitting into a size 6 is easier than ever before. What constitutes size 6 has changed over the years. We’ve all experienced the unfortunate "delight" of fitting into one size in one store but in another we’re two sizes bigger.
The Offical U.S Misses size chart places size 6 between "small" and "medium". A size 6 woman has the following measurements: Bust: 34.5”-34”, waist: 26.5”-27”, Hips: 36.5”-38.5”. These are just averages. But to be a size 6, your actual anumbers should be somewhere in and around these average size 6 measurements.
Cross the border or the ocean, and size 6 changes again. Size 6 in the US is the equivalent to a size 10 in the UK. In the UK a size 10 should be around bust, 34", waist, 27", and hips 37", according to the British Standard 3666 from 1982. The discrepancy betweenUS and UK sizing occurs in part because there is no official standardizing body in the United States. Also, in Europe, not everyone follows the UK standards.
The reason for all these wishy-washy sizing standards? Our own vanity!
The culprit is called "vanity sizing". Vanity sizing is the reason most manufactures don’t follow the standards. To play to our vanity, companies have increased what the traditional sizes were to suit our expanding shape. The method of sizing compiled from data in the 1940’s bears little resemblance to the average sizes today. In the 50’s a size 6 was a size 12 but today the average size 12 found in shops is much larger.
But you can’t rely on vanity sizing to make you a size 6, even by today's more relaxed standards. You have work at it. The question ‘how much weight do I have to lose to be a size 6?’ is difficult. How much weight you need to lose is different for every woman. It depends on your shape and which part of the body you carry your weight in. Some large-framed women will never be a size 6. And or if your body shape doesn’t fit the traditional clothes shape, you may be destined to wear ill fitting clothes until they develop a better system.
Don’t forget that along with losing pounds you also have to tone up. Doing targeted exercises can help if you want to lose from a particular area that is keeping you out of a size 6.
The following table shows the ideal weight for someone with a small frame and would hope to fit into a size 6.
Again, try to aim for the measurements of Bust, 34.5”-34”, waist,26.5”-27”, and Hips of 36.5”-38.5”. If you achieve measurements around these numbers, then should be able to fit into a size 6 or even smaller depending on the store. The important thing is to stay a healthy weight for your height as being underweight can lead to many health problems that not even shopping can’t fix.
