Most of us have a memory tucked away of how we looked when we were our "perfect size". Shopping was a joy. Every dress fit. For millions of American women, that "perfect size" is a size 8 or 6. We've covered the weight charts for size 6, and in this article, we do the same for a size 8.
Problem is, most American women are much laeger than a size 8. In fact, according to Centers for Disease Control, the average American women is 5'4" and weighs about 162 pounds, which puts us closer to a size 14 ---or worse.
But, even if you've climbed a notch or two higher on the size charts than you expected, we’ve got the information to help you reclaim your ideal size again.
What Is a Size 8?
First, you need to know the statistics to aim for. According to the Official U.S Misses chart, a size 8 is a "medium size". The standard measurements for a size 8 are bust, 35.5”-36”, waist, 27.5”-28”, and hips, 37.5” -38.5”.
A US size 8 is the equivalent of a UK size 14. The British Standard 3666 from 1982 says that a UK size 14 should be bust, 35” -37”, waist, 27”-29”, and hips, 37”-39”.
In fact, a "size 8" isn't what it used to be. Over the years, what makes a woman a size 8 has grown, a phenomenum known as vanity sizing. The problem is that we are all getting larger, especially in our waist sizes. Manufactureres have caught on the fact that women are more likely to buy a dress that they fit in if the label says it is a smaller size. Many of the smaller sizes in today's stores would have been considered plus sizes in the 1950's. A size 8 today would have been a size 14 or larger in the 1950's.
Many famous women are size 8. America Ferrea of Ugly Betty fame is a gorgeous size 8 as is British Oscar winner Kate Winslet. So if the camera adds 10 pounds imagine how good you’ll look walking into your next party in a size 8.
Men Prefer a Larger Size?
The News of the World newspaper completed research in 2008 which questioned both men and women on what they thought of women’s bodies. Big surprise. Women have a far more negative veiw of our bodies than men do. Men are far more accepting. Hard as may be to believe, most men surveyed prefer women to be around a size 10.
That’s great news, sure, but why aren’t most women happy with that? Well, the answer might lie with other women. Or, perhaps the blame belongs to those magazine covers with the pictures of impossibly-thin models.
Size 8 Measurements
But if you’ve decided that a size 10 just isn’t good enough, just how much weight do you have to lose to get into a size 8 these days? The good news is that size 8 is achievable for most frame sizes. It includes those women with hips that are a bit shapelier.
